CHOOSING NATURAL STONE

Diamonds, of course. But covering your surface with diamonds is most likely not an option. Of stone tile and extra-large slab options, quartzite and granite are the hardest stone. Ranking as an 7 on the Mohs scale, quartzite is most resistant to stains, scratches, etching, cracking, and other types of damage. Granite follows closely behind with a 7-6 ranking (6.5 average).

Stone is developed when one or more minerals coalesce into a solid form. There are 3 main categories of natural stone: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. Sedimentary stone are formed by mineral deposits on the ocean floor, or other bodies of surface water, that accumulate to create rock beds then bond together through pressure and heat. Limestone and travertine are examples of sedimentary stone. Metamorphic stone are stones that have changed (morphed) through heat, pressure and mineral deposits into another type of stone. Examples are marble, quartzite, slate, and soapstone. Igneous stone are formed by mineral liquids and gases penetrating volcanic magma before it cools and solidifies. Granite is igneous stone.

Natural stone countertops are counter surfaces covered by naturally-formed stone (not man-made material). Stone is mined from a solid rock, cut into 2 cm or 3 cm slabs, and polished. Natural stone is inherently heat, fire, scratch, and stain resistant but is somewhat porous so sealing is recommended. It should be resealed every 1 to 3 years, depending on the type of stone and amount of use. Natural stone increases property value and is considered one of the best investments for new construction or renovation. With proper care and maintenance, a natural stone countertop can last a lifetime.

The "best" countertop is the one that you find most appealing and fulfills your needs. For countertops likely to be subjected to heavy use, we recommend quartzite or granite, as they are the strongest natural stone. If you find marble, limestone, travertine or other natural stone more attractive, do not hesitate to select them. All are durable enough to withstand the demands put on most countertops.

Natural stone can be cleaned with a mild neutral cleanser, water, and a soft cloth or sponge. After removing dirty, buff dry. Avoid hard bristle brushes, cleansers with acid, and bleach as these may affect sealers or could damage the stone's surface.
